Living well outdoors

Camp Craft

The daily practices that make a camp comfortable, safe, and low-impact — from bear-safe food storage to a functional kitchen and latrine.

General practice

  • Kitchen, sleep, and toilet triangle — separate all three by at least 100 yards where possible.
  • Hang or lock food out of reach of local wildlife.
  • Dig catholes 6–8 inches deep, 200 feet from water.
  • Break down camp so a stranger can't tell you were there.

Regional focus

Boreal Canada

Bugs in summer, cold in winter — plan for both.

Key items

  • Bug shelter over kitchen
  • Wall tent and stove for winter camps
  • Cache food in trees away from tent

Regional caution: Never keep food or scented items in a winter tent — bears wake in warm spells.
