Planner-relevant notes
Book rifugi months out — half-board makes the itinerary feasible with a light pack. Via ferrata kit (harness, energy absorber, helmet) is not optional for the routes.
Field notes
- Storm-driven wet limestone is dangerously slick — plan short exposed sections around forecasts.
- Rifugi close early Oct; the Alta Via becomes a self-supported expedition after.
- Every rifugio has a locked winter room — for emergencies only.
