Field Dressing Big Game

Field dressing, quartering, and packing out big game while preserving meat quality — with regional focus on species and terrain.

General practice

  • Recover the animal first — do nothing until it is confirmed dead.
  • Get the guts out and heat off within an hour when possible.
  • Quarter and hang in shade or snow for cooling.
  • Follow the local wanton-waste and tag-attachment laws to the letter.

Regional focus

Rocky Mountains

Big country, big packs, and grizzly protocol.

Key items

  • Rocky Mountain elk
  • Mule deer
  • Bighorn sheep (once-in-a-lifetime tag)

Regional caution: Yell during the pack out and store meat 200+ yards from camp in bear country.
