The country
Under the boardwalks Yellowstone is a huge volcanic plateau — geyser basins, meadow river valleys, and burn-mosaic lodgepole forest. The Thorofare corner is the most remote spot in the Lower 48.
Why enthusiasts come
A permitted backcountry system with 300+ campsites lets you plan multi-week loops through wolf and bison country. Fishing is still world class in the right drainages.
Planner-relevant notes
Bear spray is not optional. Hydrothermal features can be lethal off-trail — never bushwhack a basin. River fords in June are dangerous; plan for late-summer flows.
Field notes
- Bison have right of way at 25 yards — reroute rather than pass close.
- Cutthroat conservation: check current regs, some drainages are catch-and-kill for lake trout.
- Storms build over the plateau by early afternoon — start river fords at dawn.
